Everyone is different, so different people need to focus on different steps to get a six pack. Look at the table below and see where you fit in.
Person 1 has a naturally low level of body fat, but lacks well developed abdominal muscles. They will very likely have a flat and maybe toned stomach but will lack a defined six pack. Solution: Effective Abdominal Exercises
Person 2 has well developed abdominal muscles and low body fat. They already have a six pack. Solution: Do whatever you are doing as it is clearly working
Person 3 has the most to work on, as they have a lot of body fat and also relatively little abdominal muscle. Solution: Effective abdominal exercises and reduce body fat.
Person 4 has well developed abdominals, but they are hidden beneath a layer of body fat. Most people who want to get a six pack are like person 4. Solution: Reduce body fat to reveal abdominals.
You now know which areas you need to focus on to get a six pack. I know it only took 2 minutes, but I cannot stress how many people fail to understand this! Although the 4 category system is a simplified version of reality, it gives you a good idea of what you should be doing to gain a six pack.
If you want to burn off stomach fat, then the last thing you want to do is go and a load of sit ups or crunches- In 2002 researchers from the University of Virginia found that it takes 250,000 crunches off a pound of fat! In fact you cannot expect to be able to get rid of fat from just your stomach; you need to be doing exercises that involve your entire body.
However exercise is not the only way to get rid of excess body fat, you can achieve progress faster by looking at your diet. If you can try and reduce your calorific intake as well as exercising, then you can attack that excess body fat from two fronts. We are here to help you out- we have some great resources on how to easily improve your diet and also the most effective cardiovascular exercises.
Some abdominal exercises are a lot better at helping strengthen and build up the size of your abs. If you lack strong abdominals like person 1 or 3, then you need to start performing exercises that challenge your entire core properly. You would be amazed at the amount of exercises that engage your core- press ups and squats have their place beside weighted crunches if you want a rock solid core and great set of abs.
Abdominal exercises are also really relevant for person 4, even though their priority is getting rid of body fat. This is because the bigger and more prominent your abs are, the less fat you have to lose to get a prominent and visible six pack.
